This is a cup for the hard of winning. We did reach the Final of its predecessor (Leyland DAF) in those heady days of the 1990s winning versus Bristol Rovers and losing an enthralling 3-2 encounter with Birmingham City. For those only accustomed to Premiership footie, this is for the teams in the bottom 2 divisions of the Football League (League 1 and League 2)
Morecambe are in their inaugural season in the Football League so this is our first meeting as League members.
We managed a 3-0 victory against Sammy McIlroy's men pre-season, but this was no guarantee of success. Tranny made a few changes from the normal line-up but Morecambe looked the hungrier of the two sides. Their cup fighting pedigree has already been established with victory against Wolves in the League Cup. Didn't we used to be giant killers?
I think the cliche about concentrating on the league is a little early this year. We still have the F.A. Cup but..........................
